BCCI unlikely to renew conditioning coach Paddy Upton’s contract

BCCI unlikely to renew conditioning coach Paddy Upton’s contract

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided against renewing conditioning coach Paddy Upton. He was roped in in July after head coach Rahul Dravid put in a request keeping the T20 World Cup 2022 in mind. He joined the Indian camp during their tour of the West Indies and remained until the end of the mega-event in Australia.

But after team India’s poor exit in the global event, the governing body is likely to part ways with the renowned 53-year-old coach. He came under heavy criticism during the tournament for not being able to help the players. Even former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioned him for not getting the best out of KL Rahul.

This was Paddy’s second string with the Indian team. Earlier, he served them from 2008 to 2011, including the famous 2011 World Cup win. He was handpicked by then head coach Gary Kristen. He has also served some IPL sides like Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors.

Not renewing Paddy Upton is not the first major step the BCCI has taken. A week ago, they sacked the entire senior men’s selectors panel, including Chetan Sharma. Reports surfaced that there were multiple reasons that led the body to sack the selectors.

There has also been a debate over split captaincy. The BCCI might go ahead and name different captains in different formats. With the next edition of the T20 World Cup being two years away, the management wants to build a team with a new set of players. All-rounder Hardik Pandya is the front runner to lead the T20I side.

Team India are currently engaged for a three-match ODI series against New Zealand. After the completion of the ongoing series, they will next tour Bangladesh for three ODIs and two Test matches. After a break post the World Cup, senior players will return to duty as they start preparations for the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be played next year.
