During the 2019 ODI World Cup, MS Dhoni was seen batting with three different bat stickers. They were Sareen Sports (SS Sports), Beat All Sports (BAS) and Sanspareils Greenlands (SG). Often known for batting with either Reebok or Spartan bat stickers, many were left confused as to why he would do it.
Five years after the 2019 ODI World Cup, the owner of BAS, Somi Kohli, revealed the reason why he used the BAS bats. In a video that has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), the owner revealed that the former Indian captain used the brand as a way to pay tribute, not charging a single penny.
Dhoni did not mention any money. He just said, 'Put your stickers on my bats and send them across'. I tried to convince him, 'You're letting go of such a lucrative contract'. He let go of crores of rupees worth of contract. I requested his wife Sakshi, his father, mother. Even told his CA and Paramjit from Ranchi. They all went to his home before the World Cup. But he said 'No… it is my decision',Somi Kohli on MS Dhoni
Dhoni was recently spotted using a bat with the sticker of Prime Sports. Prime Sports is a store in Ranchi owned by his friend, Paramjit Singh.
SG CEO explains why MS Dhoni was using the three different brand stickers
Paras Anand has been working for SG Cricket for over 20 years. In 2020, he also revealed that MS Dhoni had also used SG equipment during his illustrious cricket career. So when Dhoni and his agent could not find any bat sponsor during the 2019 World Cup, the former Indian captain decided to use the three brands as a way to pay tribute to them.
Dhoni was unable to find any sponsors as many believed he was going to retire from the sport. Along with that, the brands could not afford to sponsor him. He did end up retiring from international cricket a year later, but still plays in the IPL. Dhoni last featured in the 2023 IPL final, where he was spotted using equipment from Sareen Sport.
