Ben Stokes is one of the fine all-rounders in international cricket. He was with the team in the ICC 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s where his performance won their maiden title. He was also the Player of the Match in the World Cup.
But on Monday, the 31-year-old completely shocked the cricket fraternity over his decision of bidding adieu to ODI cricket. Tuesday’s ODI at his home ground Riverside will be his final ODI. 84* vs New Zealand in 2019 (World Cup final)
This will be regarded as one of the best innings in a World Cup game. England were chasing the total of 242 and they were reduced to 83/4. Jos Buttler and Stokes then stitched a partnership and when the former was dismissed, Stokes took the responsibility.
At the other end, wickets kept tumbling but the English star scored an unbeaten 84 against New Zealand in the World Cup final in 2019 at the historic Lord’s. When 15 runs were needed in the final over, Stokes helped England tie the match. In the Super Over, he scored eight runs out of his team’s 15 runs.
99 vs India in 2021
England were chasing a massive 337-run target to win. After a good opening 110-run stand between Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, Stokes entered the crease at number three. He took some time before exploding.
He completed his half-century off 40 balls and the next, we saw 6,6,6,1,6,4,2,6,6,2,4 from him but he missed just one run to score his century when Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed him.
89 vs South Africa 2019
This knock came in the 2019 World Cup which saw a dangerous English side led by Eoin Morgan. It was the first match of the tournament and England set a mammoth 311 for South Africa. Stokes, with nine boundaries scored 89 runs. South Africa lost the match eventually by 104 runs.
102 vs Australia, 2017
Australia set a target of 277 with and England’s response at the start wasn’t great as they were tethering at 35/3 when captain Eoin Morgan saw Ben Stokes as an able ally and the duo stitched a partnership that pushed the score to 194. Stokes scored his ton and England won the match by Duckworth-Lewis method.
“And the his [Stokes] batting was very exceptional. He was very calm at the crease; very relaxed. All those games he’s played really came to the fore today. He was outstandig. His potential is through the roof,” Morgan said after the match.
71* vs Pakistan
Pakistan set a more-than-competitive 340 runs on the board with the help of Babar Azam’s century. Enland responded by a Jason Roy and James Vince adding 94 runs for the first wicket.
When Stokes walked out to bat, he brilliantly scored 71 runs off 64 balls in the high pressure situation. England chased down the target with three balls to spare.
