England’s Test skipper Ben Stokes once again blamed the packed schedule for England’s poor run in the ODIs. He shared a cryptic tweet after England’s loss to South Africa in the first ODI. Stokes is one of the best players in the world of cricket right now, but he is a criticizer of crammed schedules, as according to him, lots of cricket affects the quality.

The all-rounder retweeted Wisden’s post, “What is England’s biggest issue in ODI cricket?” He replied: “Begins with S ends with E and has chedul in there as well.”

Because playing all-format is “unsustainable” for him, he retired from the 50-over format last year. “We are not cars,” the 32-year-old told BBC Test Match Special. “You can’t just fill us up and we’ll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again.”

The defending champions have won just five out of their 13 matches since 2022 in ODIs, and their W/L ratio is better than teams like Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, PNG, and West Indies.

England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler admitted that had he been a youngster right now, he would have wanted to play all-format cricket and will get frustrated not to be able to play them. “I feel for the players to be honest. There are certain players who have the ability to play all three formats, but that is kind of impossible because of the schedules,” Buttler said, as quoted by the Evening Standard.

Ben Duckett and Harry Brook earned their ODI caps, but they won’t be able to play the ODI series against Bangladesh, which is slated to start just a day after the New Zealand series. These two didn’t do well in their debuts and got out for single-digit scores.

In the first ODI, batting first, South Africa scored 298/7. Despite a century knock from opener Jason Roy, the visitors fell short of 27 runs. The second ODI is underway at the Mangaung Oval, and England are asked to bat first.
