Although England’s Test skipper Ben Stokes is back to bowling pace after practicing with heavily patched knees, former English cricketer David Llyod recommends him to bowl off-spin to get better results. He mentioned names of past players and how they came to reinvent themselves as off-spinners.

Llyod believes if Ben Stokes is facing problems with his bowling, trying his hand on off-spin could be a way to reinvent himself. Stokes bowled only 3 overs on the first day of the 2nd Ashes Test and looked slightly out of rhythm. Llyod thinks Stokes isn’t fully fit to bowl pace and off-spin could be his savior.

David Llyod gave examples of players like Eddie Hemmings, Mike Watkinson, Ashley Giles, and Ian Botham who took wickets by bowling off-spin. Even Joe Root’s off-spin bowling in the first Ashes Test proved to be useful for England, making it even more likely an option.

Talking about Ben Stokes, David Llyod said, “It’s clear that Ben Stokes isn’t fully fit to bowl and I wonder if he can reinvent himself as an off-spinner. Eddie Hemmings did it. Mike Watkinson did it. Ashley Giles did it. And Ian Botham took wickets bowling off-spin. Stokes has a basic action and it wouldn’t put any strain on his front knee.” In the ongoing Ashes series, Ben Stokes has bowled just 17 overs so far and taken 2 wickets.

Ben Stokes the bowler hasn’t impressed and continues to receive criticism for no-balls and ineffectiveness. Australia lead the Ashes series 1-0 so far and are looking to make it 2-0 after a solid 400+ day 1 stand.
