A major blunder happened during a New Zealand Women‘s ODI match against Sri Lanka on Friday (June 30) at the Galle International Stadium in Galle. New Zealand’s off-spinner Eden Carson ended up bowling 11 overs due to a counting error.
The incident happened during the second innings of the second ODI. The visitors were defending 300 runs when Carson, who completed her full quota by the 45th over, came to bowl again in the 47th over and conceded just one run.
The strange thing was that this error was unnoticed by both the teams as well as the umpires. This led to Carson becoming the first New Zealand cricketer to deliver more than 10 overs in ODI cricket since 1993.
New Zealand won the match by 116 runs
Talking about the match, New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first. They put on 329/7 in 50 overs on the back of Sophie Devine‘s 137 and Amelia Kerr‘s 108 runs.
Later, despite Kavisha Dilhari’s 84 off 98, Sri Lanka could reach just 218 in 48.4 overs to lose the match by 111 runs. Eden Carson, in her 11 overs, scalped one wicket and conceded 34 runs with a maiden over at an economy of 3.40. Lea Tahuhu was the pick of the bowling attack as she scalped four wickets for 31 runs in eight overs at an economy of 3.88.
With this win, New Zealand have tied the three-match ODI series 1-1. The third ODI is on Monday (July 3). In the first ODI, New Zealand could score 170/5 in 28 overs, which were easily chased by Sri Lanka to win the match by nine wickets.
