Chetan Sharma has resigned from his role as India’s All-India Senior Men Selection Committee’s chairman. His resignation came after he was caught in a sting operation conducted by Zee Knews Channel. According to an ANI report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah accepted Sharma’s resignation.

In the videos that were aired on the channel on February 14, Sharma disclosed seveal issues related to the team and what went behind the sacking of Virat Kohli as India’s captain and his elleged issue with former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. It seems that Sharma had no idea that he was being recorded at that time.

Yes, Chetan has tendered his resignation to BCCI secratary Jay Shah and his resignation has been accepted. His position had become untenable after the sting operation,” a senior BCCI source told PTI. “He resigned voluntarily and wasn’t asked to resign.”

Sharma was in Kolkata along with the members of the selection committe. The selection committee is now left with four members- Salil Ankola, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, and S Sharath. The BCCI is yet to appoint a new chairman and need to find a new replacement urgently for the third and fourth India versus Australia Tests.

Sharma and the entire selection panel was removed by the BCCI after India’s semi-final loss against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. New faces were invited but at the same time, the BCCI reappointed Sharma as chairman.

In the revelations, Sharma even alleged that several players take pain-relief injections to play matches without being fully fit. “The players are not fit but they take injections to play. They are ready to play even at 80% fitness. They take injections and start playing.”

He talked about the “ego clash” between Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly, about how Ganguly asked Kohli to reconsider his decision to step down from captaincy and how Kohli denied the same, calling the decision a “progressive step” by the board.

Sharma alleged that the BCCI did not prefer Rohit as captain but because Kohli started considering himself “bigger than cricket“, the apex body used the time when he was through a lean patch to sack him. “Ganguly did not favor Rohit but he never liked Virat. You can put it in this way.”

Sharma, who was a pacer, played 23 Tests and 65 ODIs in which he picked 128 wickets. He became the chief selector for the first time in December 2020.
