“We were not favoring Rohit, we were just against Virat,” Chetan Sharma reveals in explosive sting operation
Chetan also alleged that several players take injections in private to play in the matches dispute being 80 to 85 percent fit.
Virat Kohli, Chetan Sharma, Rohit Sharma
Chetan Sharma, who is the Chairman of the All-India Senior Selection Committee, was caught in a scandal when Zee Media conducted a sting operation on him on Tuesday. He has revealed unheard stories about what had gone behind the infamous incident when former India captain Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy role back in December 2021.
Chetan was reinstated as the Board of Control for Cricket in India chief selector in January this year after he was sacked following India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia last year. In one of the controversial videos that are gone viral on social media since it was aired on the news channel, Chetan can be heard talking about the incident when Kohli was sacked as India’s captain. Kohli decided to step down from the T20I role after which the BCCI decided to remove him from the ODI captaincy too.
According to the 57-year-old Chetan, Rohit was not preferred as India’s captain, but as the BCCI wanted to remove Kohli at the earliest, they took advantage of the time when the 34-year-old was struggling with a lean patch.
“We were not favoring Rohit as a captain; we were just against Virat Kohli. BCCI took advantage of Virat’s poor form and removed him from the captaincy. They should not treat the country’s number-one batter like this. Shameful,” Chetan said in the sting operation. According to Chetan, the BCCI did not like it when Kohli started considering himself above the sport. “Ganguly did not favor Rohit, but he never liked Virat. You can put it in this way.”
Chetan also feels that Kohli thinks he lost the captaincy because of the then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. And that is why, Kohli, in a press conference ahead of the India versus South Africa series, declared, even before the official announcement, that he will be leaving the captaincy. As per Chetan, Kohli just wanted to “get back at Sourav that’s why he did it.”

Chetan Sharma reveals Jasprit Bumrah hid his injury and that several players take injections to play matches
Chetan alleged that several players take injections in private to play in the matches dispute being 80 to 85 percent fit. “Team India players are aware about which injections come in anti-doping“. He also disclosed that India pacer Jasprit Bumrah hid an injury during a T20 series against Australia last year. He entered the setup as a fit player, but before the second T20I, his pain increased despite that he hid it to keep himself in the reckoning for the T20 World Cup squad. But as he got injured, he still hasn’t fully recovered now.
Chetan also disclosed that Hardik Pandya will be given the captaincy role in the near future and that Rohit Sharma would no longer be a part of the T20I setup. According to Chetan, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya trust him blindly and have even visited his home. Pandya has visited him more frequently than others.
The BCCI is certainly not happy with Chetan Sharma and plans to fire him from the role. As per the contract, Chetan is not supposed to speak to the media.
“It will be (BCCI secretary) Jay’s (Shah) call as to what will be Chetan’s future. The question is whether T20 skipper or ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma would like to sit with Chetan in a selection meeting knowing that he has let out internal discussions,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
