Covid outbreak in DC camp forces organisers to reschedule match against PBKS, new venue announced
Delhi Capitals
The Indian Premier League (IPL) announced on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, that the 32nd game of the IPL 2022 between Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS), which was scheduled to take place at the MCA Stadium in Pune but it has been rescheduled to avoid any issues arising from the Covid situation within the DC camp.
This comes after DC physiotherapist Patrick Farhart tested positive for COVID-19 on April 15, forcing the entire contingent to be quarantined rather than go to Pune for their next match. The team’s Sports Massage Therapist, Chetan Kumar, came back positive for the virus on April 16. On April 18, the floodgates erupted after Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh tested positive for COVID-19 and was hospitalised as a result.
Medical director Abhijit Salvi and publicist Akash Mane, in addition to him, tested positive for the virus. As a result, the DC team was subjected to many rounds of RT-PCR testing, with the rest of the team testing negative for the virus. They were, however, asked to stay in their rooms.
DC to recall players in bio-bubble only after a week
After several members of the Delhi Capitals’ contingent tested positive for Covid-19, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided in a meeting on Tuesday to move the match between the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings from MCA stadium in Pune to Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.
This was done to prevent any more problems such as the long-distance bus travel in a closed setting due to an undiscovered case. The COVID positive cases are being isolated and monitored, according to the official statement. On days 6 and 7, they will be tested, and if both tests come back negative, they would be re-integrated into the Delhi Capitals’ bio-secured bubble.
While Marsh was not a regular in the team so far this season, the team might not be affected majorly as the support staff has borne the brunt majorly in the outbreak in the camp. However, the team will be under heavy testing in order to avoid a repeat of the previous edition when the season had to be suspended.
