The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that they have accepted the recommendation of the local organizing committee of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and are considering adding Cricket to the 2028 LA Olympics.
Along with Cricket, sports like Softball/Baseball, Squash, Flag Football and Lacrosse were also accepted by the IOC. The President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, said, “These proposals have been accepted as a package by the IOC executive board taking into consideration that these proposals and these sports are fully in line with the sports culture of our host in ’28, with the American sports culture.” Bach added, “All these proposals will now go to the IOC Session here in Mumbai for a vote.“
Thomas Bach and the IOC want to play sports that are known in the United States of America, such as Baseball, Lacrosse and Flag Football, while also promoting international sports like Cricket and Squash. Bach believes by adding cricket, both the Olympics and the sport of cricket would benefit.
Now the inclusion of cricket will be decided in an executive board meeting. This session will happen on 14th October to 16th October in Mumbai. The board will conduct a vote to finalize which sports should be included.
Cricket in Multi-sport events
Although cricket is the 2nd most watched sport in the world, it was never a constant feature in various multi-sport events for years. The first time it debuted in any event was in the 1900 Paris Summer Olympics, where only two teams participated.
Cricket was then introduced in the Pacific games in 1979, and has been played 7 times since then. In the first 4 editions One Day Internationals were played, but in 2011 they made the switch to T20Is.
Commonwealth Games hosted Men’s Cricket for the first time in 1998, where the South African Men’s Cricket Team won Gold. It was then reintroduced in 2022, but only for Women. Australia beat India in the finals to clinch the Gold.
Asian Games introduced cricket in 2010 and was played 2 more times in 2014 and 2023. In the recent Asian Games, India won Gold in both Men’s and Women’s Cricket Competitions. It was the first time India had participated in the Cricket competition of the Asian Games as well.
