On 10th August, 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that they are going to push to include cricket in the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles, USA. Cricket has only been played in the Paris 1900 Summer Olympics, where Great Britain faced hosts France.
The ICC formed a working group that included many heads of cricket boards, whose only aim is to ensure cricket is a sport in the 2028 Olympics. This also had the support of USA Cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board, and the Asian Cricket Council.
Women’s cricket was a part of the 2022 Commonwealth game, with Australia winning the final against India. It has been a regular part of the Asian Games and will also be in the 2022 Asian Games being held in Hangzhou.
The International Olympic Committee is now set to make a decision of including cricket in the Olympics or not. The vote will take place on 8th September in Switzerland. Along with cricket, they will be voting on which new sports they should add in the multi-sport event.
