Caribbean Premier League is set to launch their inaugural T10 tournament named “The 6ixty” in August. In St Kitts, the inaugural season will take place from August 24 to 28, immediately before the CPL season. The tournament will feature matches between all six men’s franchises and three women’s teams. It will be launched in partnership with Cricket West Indies, who have become the first full-member board to create a T10 tournament. Chris Gayle will act as an ambassador.

In an official statement released by Caribbean Premier League, Ricky Skerritt, President of Cricket West Indies, said: “THE 6IXTY has come about because of a close collaboration between CPL and CWI which is the way forward. I am really exited about the innovation, exitement and entertainment that it is going to bring to the fans.”

“You’re going to get some people saying ‘this isn’t cricket’ but my view is that cricket is the most important element of it It’s just about trying to generate excitement and interest. It’s like what’s going on with golf right now – you have to look at things through a different lens sometimes. This is about a new audience. We’re very much going after the younger generation,” CPL CEO Pete Russell told ESPNcricinfo.

THE 6IXTY is different than a basic T10 tournament

This format is entirely different from the T10 competition. There are several notable differences which are as follows:

Instead of 10 wickets, there will be just six wickets.

If the batsmen smash two sixes, then they can ‘unlock’ a floating third powerplay.

Teams will bowl five consecutive overs from each end and won’t switch ends after each over.

If the bowling team fails to complete delivering in 10 overs in 45 minutes, then a fielder will be removed for the final six balls.

Fans will be able to vote for a ‘mystery free hit’ via an app or website.
