Meanwhile, Mumbai had won the toss and opted to bowl first. CSK’s batting fell like a pack of cards as they got bundled out for just 97 runs with MS Dhoni being the top scorer of the day, from both sides, with his 36 off 33 runs. But his dragging the innings had gone for vain.

Mumbai Indians’ openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma walked out to bat; Kishan got dismissed for 6 runs while Rohit scored 18 off 14. When at one end, wickets started falling quickly, Tilak Verma stayed till the end. He smashed 4 fours and scored 34 off 32. He was at one time, helped by Hrithrik Shokeen’s 18 off 23 but a ball from Moeen Ali dismissed that latter.

Rohit praised Tilak Verma and said, “I think he’s going to be an all format player for India, very soon.” Tilak Varma has been the find of the season for Mumbai Indians. He crossed 30 plus mark in 7 innings.

Tim David then played a quick cameo knowing that less runs are on the boards to score. He scored 16 off 7 and smashed 2 sixes to finish the innings in style.

It was for the second time that Chennai failed to reach the playoffs. The first happened in 2020; the same year when Mumbai Indians lifted their fifth trophy. In the previous encounters of the two teams, CSK had tasted the victory.

CSK had won their last match against Delhi Capitals by 91 runs after setting a massive target of 208-6 with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway’s 41 and 97. While Mumbai Indians had to face defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders even after Jasprit Bumrah’s maiden 5-wicket haul.

This is Mumbai Indians’ third win of the season in 12 matches with having just 6 points. Meanwhile, CSK had a minor chance to go for the playoffs had they won this match. But with the lost, their hope for the playoffs also shattered. They are currently occupying the 9th position on the points table, just above their arch-rival Mumbai Indians with 4 wins in 12 matches.
