On 6th November, Angelo Mathews became the first player in International cricket to be given out by timed out. After Mathews took more than 2 minutes to take guard following the previous dismissal, the Bangladesh Captain, Shakib al Hassan, appealed and the Umpires decided to give the wicket based on timed out. The Sri Lankan veteran pleaded his case with the umpires and Shakib, showing his helmet had a faulty strap. Unfortunately these arguments were of no use as he went back to the pavilion.
In the 2nd innings while chasing the target of 280, Shakib and Najmul Hossain Shanto built an impressive partnership of 169 runs, scoring 82 and 90 respectively. The partnership was broken by Angelo Mathews, who was bowling his fifth over of the game, by dismissing the Bangladesh captain. The medium pacer bowled an off-cutter which deceived Shakib and induced a leaning edge. The ball popped up and Charith Asalanka dived forward to take a good catch.
As Shakib walked back to the pavilion unhappy, Mathews looked at him and pointed to his wrist. He sent him off by saying “it’s time to go,” referencing how he was dismissed in the first innings. The veteran struck again next over, bowling Najmul for 90 runs. He finished the game with figures of 2/35 with 7.1 overs bowled.
Sri Lanka become 4th team to be knocked out of the World Cup after loss to Bangladesh
After being sent to bat first, the Bangladesh bowling had a great performance on a batting pitch, Despite a century by Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka only managed to put up 279 runs. Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama were the joint second highest run scorers, with both scoring 41.
After losing both openers in the powerplay, Shakib and Shanto built an impressive partnership of 169 runs but both lost their wickets to Angelo Mathews. There was a small scare for Bangla tigers as they lost 4 wickets in the span of 49 runs, but Towrid Hridoy and Tanzim Hasan Shakib kept their nerves and led Bangladesh to their 2nd win.
Sri Lanka are now the 4th team to have gotten knocked out of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. After a 3 wicket loss to Bangladesh, they are mathematically out of the race for a semi-final spot and will now play to ensure they qualify for a spot in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
