On 6th November, Angelo Mathews became the first international player to be timed out. Coming in to bat after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mathews took more than 2 minutes to prepare himself to face his first delivery due to his broken strap. After being informed by his teammate, Shakib Al Hassan appealed and the umpires gave timed out.

In the post-match press conference, Mathews tore into the Bangladesh team’s character, saying this is the lowest an opposition team has stooped in the 15 years he has played. The veteran also called out the umpires for allowing the wicket to happen, saying he still had 5 seconds left after his helmet broke. He asked where common sense went as it was an equipment failure and not done intentionally.

Here, I think in my 15 years of career, I’ve never seen a team going down to that level because obviously the umpires also admitted that it’s equipment malfunction, and they could have gone upstairs and checked again.

Mathews later called out Shakib’s character, saying his actions were disgraceful and he has lost all respect for him. He also announced that he has video evidence of him being ready in 2 minutes, before his helmet strap broke and will submit the evidence to the ICC.

Shakib Al Hasan says he wouldn’t let himself get timed out

Bangladesh captain, Shakib Al Hasan, defended the appeal to get Angelo Mathews timed out in the post-match press conference. When questioned about the spirit of cricket being involved, Shakib said the ICC must change the rules. He then said he won’t get timed out like the Sri Lankan batter as he’ll be careful.

Shakib will miss Bangladesh’s last match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup after fracturing his index finger. He fractured it while batting against Sri Lanka, where he scored a match winning 82 runs. This comes as a hindrance to Bangladesh’s attempts to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy, in which the top 7 teams in the World Cup points table and Pakistan will qualify.

In case you missed!
