Coming in to bat when his team was 4-24, David Miller played one of the greatest innings by a South African in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. With South Africa batting first in incredibly difficult conditions, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood toppled down the top order with ease. The duo breathed fire as South Africa were only 18 runs in the powerplay and lost their 4th wicket when they had only 24 runs.

What followed was a smart innings by Miller that showed maturity and patience. The southpaw stayed at one end and gave his wicket an expensive price. He batted for 116 balls and scored 101 runs, bringing up the century in his 115th ball with a six. While wickets tumbled at one end, Miller put a high price on his wicket and tackled the Australian bowlers by absorbing pressure.

From 24-2, Miller led South Africa to 213 runs, a target that isn’t competitive. The second highest scorer was Heinrich Klassen, who missed out on a half century by 3 runs. The Australian pace trio of Starc, Hazlewood and Pat Cummins picked up a combined 8 wickets while Travis Head got 2 wickets.

Fans are in awe of David Miller’s fabulous century, but call out the poor South African performance

Netizens had nothing but praise for the South African southpaw, calling it one of the best innings they have seen. They praised David Miller for being the only batter to perform while others failed. At the same time, many criticized the South African batting line up for falling down like a house of cards.

Australia started their innings with a bang, with David Warner and Head attacking the pacers. They had a 60 run stand before David Warner was clean bowled by Markram. Mitchell Marsh gifted his wicket after giving a catch off Kagiso Rabada’s bowling. Head finally departed after being bowled by Keshav Maharaj. As of now, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are in the middle for Australia, but are unable to tackle the spinners.
