Pakistan already had a dim chance to qualify for the semi-finals. If they batted first against England in their last group stage match, they had to post a massive total on the scoreboard, then bundle out the Englishmen for paltry runs to win the match by 287 runs to save themselves a berth in the semifinals.
But, England skipper Jos Buttler destroyed all the chances of Pakistan to qualify for the last four on Saturday (November 11) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After winning the toss, Buttler chose to bat first.
Now whatever England posts on the scoreboard, Pakistan have to chase it down in 2.5 overs or below 10 overs to dethrone New Zealand from the number four position on the points table. But England, at the time of writing this article, had scored 77 runs in 12 overs without losing any wickets and would eventually post a total which would make it tough for Babar Azam and Co. to chase within 10 overs.
This means that Pakistan are practically out of the World Cup. From the eight group stage matches they have played so far, the Men in Green could win just four matches and occupy fifth position on the points table.

Pakistani supporters were desperately praying for Pakistan’s winning the toss or Jos Buttler’s choosing to bowl first after winning the toss. But as that did not happen, it prompted the fans on social media to come up with hilarious reactions, with some even claiming they won’t be watching England’s match in the future.

Talking about Pakistan’s campaign, they started well with a thumping win over the Netherlands and followed it with a win over Sri Lanka. But after that, they went on to lose four matches on the trot before securing a win over Bangladesh and New Zealand (via DLS).
