On 19th November India played Australia in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup finals. The match was held in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, which is the biggest cricket stadium in the world. The renovated stadium has hosted 2 IPL finals, 8 ODIs, 3 Tests and 6 T20Is. Despite it being a grand stadium, the fans did not live up to the hype.
Despite India being in the World Cup finals, the fans in the stadium were not supportive enough. In the 1,32,000 capacity stadium, 92,453 fans were present and it was not loud enough. Many fans on the internet complained that the fans were silent and were more interested in taking pictures and selfies.
India ended up losing the finals by 7 wickets. Being sent in to bat first, India had a great start but after losing 3 wickets in the first 11 overs the Australians took over. Being bowled out for the first time in the 2023 World Cup, India only managed to score 240 runs. Australia lost their first 3 wickets inside the powerplay, but a magnificent century by Travis Head and a gritty half century by Marnus Labuschagne ensured Australia’s 6th World Cup Title.
Fans call the Ahmedabad crowd a disgrace
Many fans on the internet were vocal about their displeasure of the Narendra Modi Stadium crowd. Netizens called the fans a disgrace for not getting behind the Indian team when they were down. They also said the match should’ve been played in stadiums like Wankhede Stadium or Eden Gardens as they were cities with a great cricket culture and great fans.
Check out their reactions:
India and Australia will now face each other in a 5 match T20I series. The matches will be played in the cities of Visakhapatnam, Thiruvanatapuram, Guhawati, Raipur and Bangalore. After this India will travel to South Africa for 3 ODIs, 3 T20Is and 2 Tests.
