Three runs for four wickets- the scoreboard read in 3.1 overs. And the reason? Mohammed Siraj. He dismissed three batters within four overs and ensured a difficult path for the Sri Lankan batters to chase a tough target of 356 runs on Thursday (November 2) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

But before Siraj, the bowler who drew the first blood was Jasprit Bumrah who dismissed in-form Pathum Nissanka for lbw for a golden duck on the very first ball of the second innings. And Siraj, on his first ball sent Dimuth Karunaratne to packing for golden duck.

The third batter, Sadeera Samarawickrama came to bat and followed Karunaratne to the dugout after he edged Siraj’s delivery to Shreyas Iyer’s hands. Samarawickrama also departed for a duck.

Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis looked helpless when he became the fourth wicket in the fourth over. It was Siraj again whose delivery Mendis failed to read, leading to the ball smashing right onto the stumps. At the time of writing, Siraj has picked up three wickets for five runs in four overs.

For Indian fans, seeing Mohammed Siraj doing his duty in the powerplay against Sri Lanka again was nothing short of wonderful. Siraj’s heroics in the 2023 Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka helped India win the tournament. Watching the success of all the departments of the team makes them jump on their feet out of ecstasy, for the prize after such performances and defeating opponents means inching closer to the World Cup.

Moments after Siraj’s show, Mohammed Shami joined the party to dismiss two more Sri Lankan batters. In the 10th over, he dismissed Charith Asalanka who could score just one run after playing 24 deliveries.

On the next delivery, new batter Dushan Hemantha emulated Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne to get dismissed for a golden duck. Sri Lanka are on the verge of getting bundled out for an embarrassing score and will script unwanted record in ODIs as well as in ODI World Cups.
