On 2nd November, India faced Sri Lanka for their 7th match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Many saw this as an easy match for India, but fans were more excited for Virat Kohli finally scoring his 49th century. He had already missed centuries against Australia and New Zealand previously.

Being sent in to bat first, Captain Rohit Sharma was clean bowled by Dilshan Madushanka in the 2nd ball of the innings. In comes Virat Kohli, who was in red hot form. Everyone knew he was aiming to equalize Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the most ODI centuries by a batter.

Kohli and Shubman Gill scored a massive partnership of 189 runs before Gill departed for 92. The 34-year-old was scoring at a strike rate of 100 till he scored 86. He had already been dropped before. He decided to slow down to reach his ton with ease. Unfortunately, he was caught at silly mid-off after being deceived by a slower ball by Madushanka. He left the field with 88 runs on board.

Kohli now has 442 runs in the tournament, being the 2nd highest run scorer after Quinton de Kock who has 552 runs. He is still stuck on 48 centuries, just one away from Tendulkar’s record.
