Afghanistan‘s World Cup campaign this year has been nothing short of excellent, for not only they are winning matches, but they have also produced two upsets as well. After thrashing Netherlands by seven wickets on Friday (November 3) at the Ekana Sports City, Lucknow, Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men have now surpassed Pakistan on the points table.

After winning the toss, the Dutchemen decided to bat first. With the help of Sybrand Engelbrecht’s 58 runs and Max O’Dowd’s 42, the Netherlands put 179 runs on the scoreboard in 46.3 overs. Rashid Khan starred with the bowl, taking three wickets for 31 runs in his 10 overs.

During Afghanistan’s run chase, though they did not have the start they wanted, Rahmat Shah’s 52 and captain Shahidi’s unbeaten 56 runs were enough for them to reach the target and win the match by seven wickets. In 31.3 overs, Afghanistan scored 181/3.

Netizens make fun of Pakistan after Afghanistan’s victory over the Netherlands

For the Indian fans, what captured their attention was Pakistan getting demoted to the sixth position with Afghanistan now occupying the fifth spot after the win over the Netherlands. The fans were quick to mock their neighbors and congratulate Afghanistan for their victory. Afghanistan also qualified for the 2025 Champions Trophy for the first time.

This was Afghanistan’s third win on the trot in the World Cup. They started their World Cup with a defeat to Bangladesh. And after losing to India, they shocked England before getting hammered by New Zealand.

Hashmatullah Shahidi and Co. then went on to win their next three games. They beat Babar Azam and his men in a thriller, then thrashed Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. Though they still have the chance to qualify for the semi-final, a tough match awaits them on November 7 as they will face five-time champions Australia in Mumbai.
