Shubman Gill had the chance to hammer his first ODI World Cup century but unfortunately, he missed it by just eight runs. India are currently locking horns with Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (November 2).
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka chose to field first and quickly dismissed Rohit Sharma on the second ball. However, they found it tough to break the partnership of Gill and Virat Kohli.
The duo stitched a 189-run stand between them and apart from steering the team to a decent total, they were inching closer to their respective centuries. Gill was playing at 92 off 92 balls when Dilshan Madushanka‘s short ball gave his team the breakthrough they needed. He dismissed Gill with the help of Kusal Mendis‘ catch. In his knock, Gill hit 11 boundaries and two sixes and he also batted at a strike rate of 100.
A couple of overs later, Kohli also missed his century. He fell on 88 runs from 94 balls and had he slammed his ton, he would have scored his 49th ODI century.
Netizens hail Shubman Gill for his knock
Shubman Gill has been enjoying good form this year and in the World Cup. Initially, he missed a few games of the tournament due to dengue but recovered before the Pakistan match. So far, the Punjab-born batter has scored two fifties, first against Bangladesh and against Kusal Mendis and Co.
Gill was the first Indian batter to score 1000 runs in ODIs. Indian fans wanted to see the youngster reach the three-figure mark and as he couldn’t, they expressed their hopes to see the 24-year-old play multiple great knocks for India in the World Cup.
