In Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Afghanistan must be thinking that they got the five-time champions under their control because just 91 runs were scored and seven wickets were lost during the evening of Tuesday (November 7). If Afghan supporters started celebrating in the middle-overs, that’s when they made the mistake. Those who watched the game, watched one of those classic innings Australia used to produce back in the 2000s, and the man behind this? Glenn Maxwell.
The Big Show again showed he is the man for big occasions. Before this World Cup, fans became critical of Maxwell due to his heading back to the dressing room at crucial moments, but they cannot do other than admire and appreciate what Maxwell produced today.
After the fall of seven wickets for 91 runs, skipper Pat Cummins joined Maxwell and the latter was slowly approaching his fifty. Some of those who were watching the game, including former India opener Virender Sehwag, expected a big crazy knock from Maxwell, who previously hit the fastest World Cup century, off just 40 balls in this tournament. Sehwag hilariously wrote on X that one may see in “Mata aa gayi mode” and he predicted it correctly, for “Mad’ Max was getting even more crazier.
But after scoring his hundred, the extreme Mumbai heat took a toll on his body and he fell on the ground, in pain. A cramped leg means he would not be able to run properly. But no problem! He is Maxwell and he hits maximums. While battling the cramped leg, Maxwell rose and continued the assault. In the blink of an eye, the Aussie all-rounder reached his 150 and put his team in the driver’s seat.
Afghanistan needed just one wicket, and even the wicket of Cummins will do for them. But the Aussie skipper calmly played 68 runs to score a mere 12 runs while enjoying rain of sixes during his unbeaten 189-run stand with Maxwell. The Big Show, when they needed just five runs to win, hit a maximum to guide his team to victory by three wickets, eventually scoring a perfect double century (201 off 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes).
Despite playing one of the greatest ODI innings, Glenn Maxwell wasn’t that ecstatic.
Glenn Maxwell was not that ecstatic after playing a monster innings. He also talked about how the critics now won’t write them off.
It would have been nice if it was a chanceless knock, but I had my chances, to make the most of it tonight was something I can be proud of.Maxwell said in the post-match presentation.
He added:
This is amazing because, after the first two games, people were quick to write us off. The belief was always there (as a team), after today, it would have gone a bit higher.
Earlier in the match, Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran made his maiden World Cup century, but unfortunately, it went in vain. From 143 balls, he scored 129 runs. His century and a cameo from Rashid Khan helped them reach their highest World Cup total (291/5).
