In the build-up to the 2023 ODI World Cup Finals, Australian Captain Pat Cummins said the aim of the Australian team was to silence the crowd. The pacer in the pre-match press conference stated that he knew the crowd in the Narendra Modi Stadium would be filled with India fans, so he wanted the satisfying feeling of silencing them. And that’s exactly what he did.
With some brilliant captaincy and bowling performances, Pat Cummins and Co. became the first side in the World Cup to bowl India out, restricting them to only 240 runs. While speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins recounted the time the entire Narendra Modi Stadium was silent after they dismissed Virat Kohli.
I was obviously very pumped. And then we’re in the huddle after that wicket, and Steve Smith says, “Boys, listen to the crowd for a second.” And we just took a moment of pause, and it was as quiet as a library; 100,000 Indians there, and it was so quiet. I’ll savor that moment for a long time.Pat Cummins to Sydney Morning Herald
Cummins completed his goal of silencing the Indian crowd as they won the match, leading Australia to their 6th World Cup title. The fans in the stadium also received a lot of flak, as netizens called them out for not backing the team in tough times.
