As Rohit Sharma hit Colin Ackerman over long-on for a six, he broke an eight-year-old record held by South African legend AB de Villiers. That six was his 59th maximum of the year, beating de Villiers’s 58 in 2015.

He stands above cricket legends like Chris Gayle and Shahid Afridi, who hit 56 in 2019 and 48 in 2002. Thanks to that six, he also has the record for the most sixes hit by a captain in an ICC ODI World Cup. He has hit 23 sixes so far in the 2023 edition, breaking Eoin Morgan’s 22 in 2019.

Rohit has had an influential year as the Indian captain. He led India to another Asia Cup triumph by dominating Sri Lanka in the finals and has made India favorites for the 2023 World Cup, with the team being unbeaten so far. In 2023, he scored 1100 runs in 23 innings while averaging 52.38.

Ravi Shastri credits Rohit Sharma’s captaincy to World Cup unbeaten run

India haven’t lost a single match in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup so far, playing 8 and winning 8. Many people credit India’s incredible bowling performances, which has been regarded as one of the best in the history of World Cups. They have bowled out 6 of their opponents so far, picking up 76 wickets in 8 innings. Ex-India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri, believes the credit must be given to the captain Rohit Sharma as well.

In the Club Prairie Fire podcast with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, Shastri said the Indian bowling dominance is a mixture of Rohit’s captaincy and the bowler’s skills. He says the way he has disciplined his bowlers and the way he mixes spin and pace makes him an extremely outstanding captain.

I think it is a combination of both. These guys have the experience but Rohit will take no nonsense. If they try to be flashy, Rohit will be at their ears straightaway. So you know where all the discipline comes from. He has marshaled his resources extremely well. He has been an outstanding captain in this World Cup.
