Shreyas Iyer struck yet another century as he scored 105 off 70 runs in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup semi-final. His knock saw an incredible display of ball striking, strike rotation and his wonderful ability to play spin. His partnership with Virat Kohli worth 163 was instrumental for India posting a massive target. Iyer hit 4 boundaries and 8 maximums in his blistering knock.
As he celebrated his 2nd century of the World Cup, captain Rohit Sharma imitated his celebration in a hilarious way. Iyer raised his bat to celebrate and Rohit mimicked him as he jokingly raised his hand and walked around.
Iyer’s great knock finished after he was caught by Daryl Mitchell at long on. KL Rahul had an exciting cameo as he scored 39 off 20 balls, with 5 boundaries and two maximums. Suryakumar Yadav had a disappointing day as he only managed to score 1 run. Thanks to centuries by Iyer and Kohli and a well made 80 by Shubman Gill, India scored a massive score of 397.
Robin Uthappa claims Shreyas Iyer can be the next white ball captain
Shreyas Iyer has had a great World Cup campaign so far. He has scored 526 runs in 10 innings, being the 5th highest run scorer of the tournament. Looking at this impressive form, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa claimed the middle-order batter could captain the Indian side one day.
After scoring 128 against Netherlands, Uthappa praised him on his YouTube channel. He was impressed with the changes he made to his technique to tackle short balls, a very well known weakness, and said he seems more confident. Uthappa believes if he continues this great form while batting at no. 4, Iyer could be made white ball captain in the future.
Iyer has had experience with captaincy as he led Delhi Capitals for 41 games between 2018 to 2020. After Rishabh Pant replaced him as captain, he was released by DC and was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022. He was announced as the KKR captain that season as well and led them, but missed the 2023 IPL due to an injury.
