Gautam Gambhir explains why he gave his Player of the Match award to Virat Kohli in 2009
Back in 2009, India locked horns with Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. While chasing a 316-run target, India were tethering at 23/2 when Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli forged a 224-run stand between them.
In that match, Kohli slammed his maiden international and ODI hundred by playing a knock of 107 runs from 114 balls. India won the match and Gambhir was awarded with the Player of the Match. But Gambhir gave the award to Kohli. During India’s match against South Africa, Kohli scored his 49th ODI ton, but earlier during his innings, Gambhir revealed why he gave the prize to the 35-year-old.
People don't give compliments. That's why I don't get compliments. If I was in place of Kohli and someone would have done it for me, it would have been very memorable. You hit many hundreds, but the first century would be the closest. We were 20/2 and a youngster hit a hundred.Gambhir said on Star Sports.
