The World Cup semi-finals have not been kind to Indian batter Virat Kohli. In the three semi-finals he has appeared in, he has scored only 11 runs. Many Indian fans were afraid of the Indian star’s poor performances in ODI knockouts, but exceeded everyone’s expectations with a record breaking knock.
Kohli scored his 50th ODI Century in a very important match for India. He brought up his century in 106 balls, with 8 boundaries and 1 maximum. As he reached the milestone, he bowed down to Sachin Tendulkar who was in the crowd. This is also his 3rd century in the tournament and his second 90+ score against the Kiwis, previously scoring 95 in Dharamshala.
Kohli also broke two records of Indian legend. His 50th century now makes him the batter with the most ODI centuries, overtaking Tendulkar’s 49. He also overtook Tendulkar’s record of the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup, becoming the first player to score 700 runs in the World Cup. In the 2003 World Cup, Tendulkar scored 673 runs, winning the Player of the Tournament award.

India started their innings off with a bang, with Rohit Sharma attacking the New Zealand bowlers from the word go. He scored 47 off 29 balls, before getting out to Tim Southee. Shubman Gill scored a valiant 79 before retiring hurt due to cramps. While VIrat Kohli ensured one end was stable, Shreyas Iyer continuously attacked the Kiwi bowling attack. Kohli’s brilliant innings ended 7 balls after he scored his century as he started to let loose.
