Root could score just 28 runs from 35 balls with one boundary. Though he faltered again in the 2023 ODI World Cup, a century from Ben Stokes, an 87-run knock from Dawid Malan, and Chris Woakes‘ 51 helped England post 399/9 in their 50 overs. The defending champions could not secure themselves a berth in the semi-finals this time.
Joe Root’s campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup so far
Joe Root started his World Cup campaign with a 77-run knock against New Zealand. But after a formidable 82 against Bangladesh, Root’s form slumped and he couldn’t reach double-digit runs on three occasions. Against arch-rivals Australia, he made 13 runs.
Root’s failure in the middle overs and a flop batting show by his team was the reason behind were team’s not qualifying for the semifinals. The defending champions were expected to display some formidable performances in the tournament but all they could produce were mostly lackluster shows.
The 2019 World Cup champions won just one out of the seven previous matches they have played. But they are on the cusp of victory over the Netherlands today.
