‘Deafening silence’- Majid Haq calls out Scotland players for their silence after racism report

Majid Haq, one of the victims of racism in Scotland had called out the Scottish cricket players for their silence after the racism report. On Monday, an independent review by Sportscotland published a report on institutional racism happening inside Cricket Scotland. Prior to the report, all the board members resigned from their posts and apologised publicly to the victims.

The research was being carried out after Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh spoke about how they were abused and treated differently because of the colour of their skin last year. On Tuesday, their lawyer Aamer Anwar pointed out that a mass resignation is not the only solution and questioned the reason why the Scottish players had taken a knee before games to protest racism at the Twenty20 World Cup last year because, right now, no white member of the team has chosen anything to say about the matter over the last few days.

“What was the point of Scotland ‘taking the knee’ at ICC T20 World Cup in 2021, when no white team member has chosen to say anything much or at all over the last few days on institutional racism @CricketScotland Silence is not an option, anti-racism not non-racism,” wrote Anwar on Twitter.

In response, Haq tweeted, “Looks like it was nothing other than a bit of virture signalling (and) tick box exercise because the deafening silence from a lot of them speaks volumes.

“They might feel uncomfortable but their privilege is never having to think you’ll not make the team because of racism.”

The review highlighted 448 examples that proved institutional racism. They found a lack of any equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) or anti-racist training in place for board, staff, players, volunteers, coaches, players, and umpires.

Also, last year, former Yorkshire player Azeem Rafiq claimed that English cricket was “institutionaly” racist. This led to changes in Yorkshire’s leadership.
