Kevin Sinclair will forever remember the date 26/1/24. On this date, the West Indian all-rounder scored a half-century on his Test debut, taking 97 balls to reach the milestone. Sadly, he was dismissed off the very next ball after being stumped off Nathan Lyon’s bowling.
With Australia in trouble, losing their first five wickets for only 54 runs, Alex Carey took it upon himself to get the hosts back on track, while Usman Khawaja stood at one end like a rock. The wicket keeper decided to attack Sinclair, hitting the off-spinner for a boundary on his first Test delivery. The Aussies kept attacking the debutant, hitting him for 44 runs in his first 6 balls.
Despite the high economy, Sinclair was trusted by his captain and he repaid it by dismissing Khawaja. He bowled a flighted ball outside off, baiting the opener to drive it. It edged off the bat and landed in Alick Athanze’s hand, who was at slips.
To celebrate his maiden Test wicket, Sinclair did something not many bowlers would do. He decided to do a cartwheel and followed it with a backflip, which impressed everyone on field.
West Indies fight back at the Gabba
Losing the first Test by 10 wickets, West Indies had to prove that they had some fight in them during the 2nd Test at the Gabba. Electing to bat first, West Indies were in hot water as they lost their first five wickets for just 64 runs.
Joshua Da Silva and Kavem Hodge showed their perseverance, batting long against the Australian pace attack. The duo scored 79 and 71, but received support from Kevin Sinclair, Alzarri Joseph. They managed to put up 311 runs, batting for 108 overs.
The Windies bowling started breathing fire from ball one, taking 5 wickets in the first 11 overs. Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja got Australia back on track, getting a partnership off 96. Carey was finally dismissed, putting up 65 off 49, and soon Mitchell Starc followed suit. Captain Pat Cummins and Khawaja, built yet another partnership, with Cummins reaching his half century as well. After the opener’s dismissal, Nathan Lyon and Cummins batted for 33 balls, with a partnership of 47. Lyon got out and Cummins decided to declare, with a trail of 22 runs.
Cummins didn’t want to bat against the pink ball under lights, when it’s usually the hardest to face. The decision proved correct, as Josh Hazlewood picked up the wicket of Tagenarine Chanderpaul on the last ball of the day.
