Virat Kohli’s 29th Test century came in resounding fashion during the 2nd Test against the West Indies. This is his first Test century since 2018 and thus it attracted quite a few reactions. Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta also gave his honest reaction after Kohli’s Test Ton.
Virat Kohli scored 121 runs off 206 wherein he scored 11 boundaries before he was unfortunately run out by Alzarri Joseph. With his century he equalled Don Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries. Kohli talked about how his century would mean nothing after 15-20 years, “These stats and milestones, if I do them in a situation where the team needs me, for me that’s more special than just ticking the numbers. Honestly, it is going to mean nothing in 15-20 years. It is what impact you left on the field which is more special for me and for the team.”
Among the various members of the cricket fraternity who congratulated Virat Kohli was also Deep Dasgupta. He sees Kohli’s 29th century as a big achievement and believes that judging a player on the basis of his stats is justified.
Deep Dasgupta said, “That’s a huge achievement – hundred No. 29. I think it was a really good innings and again something that didn’t come very easy to him. He really had to work for it, so you’ve got to give more credit for that.”
Deep Dasgupta believes numbers matter after Virat Kohli scores 29th Test ton
Talking about Virat Kohli’s century and how numbers play an important role in judging a player’s ability he said, “No matter what people say, numbers do matter. I’d be honest. When you look at our society as such, most of our judgment is based on numbers. More importantly, it’s just the fact that he hadn’t scored a hundred away from home, out of Asia I believe, in so many years.”
Virat Kohli is a player who can be talked about in numbers. With this century against the West Indies, he became the only batter ever to score a century on their 500th International appearance. He now has 76 hundreds to his name, certainly giving him the edge over his other counterparts.
