England’s veteran pacer James Anderson is having nothing less than a horrible outing in the Ashes series. The 40-year-old has managed only four wickets in the three Ashes Tests played so far. However, Anderson does not feel any issues with his bowling and also brushed aside the talks of his retirement.
The right-arm pacer who has close to 700 wickets in Test cricket and will be turning 41 this week feels he is still fit enough to play Test cricket and will continue as long as captain Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum want him to play. Anderson said he is still hungry and wants to put in the hard work for his team.
“I have certainly not had the returns I would have liked in this series. Everyone goes through a lean patch but you just don’t want it to be in the most high-profile series we play,” Anderson wrote in his column for The Telegraph acknowledging his poor outing.
“I keep talking to the coach and captain. They want me around, so as long as I am still hungry, want to put in the work then I will keep trying to give my best for the team. That is exactly where I am at the minute,” the pacer said.
James Anderson not worried about personal performance
The 40-year-old further talked about how he created pressure with tight spells in the fourth Ashes Test. Anderson said that although he could not take that many wickets, he felt he made contributions in some way.
“There were a couple of times when I bowled a tight five-over spell then Woody [Mark Wood] came on and took a wicket straightaway. It feels like maybe I created the pressure, then Woody came on and let loose. It’s teamwork,” wrote Anderson.
James Anderson has been included in England’s playing XI for the fifth and last Ashes Test. Now, it will be up to the veteran to make the most of the opportunity and prove that he is still worthy.
