After the Pakistan Cricket Board’s venue change request for two of the matches at the 2023 ODI World Cup was ignored by the ICC, reports now suggest that Pakistan’s participation in the quadrennial showpiece event remains uncertain. Pakistan’s matches have been scheduled in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and Kolkata.
They are scheduled to play their first match against Qualifier 1 at Hyderabad on 6th October. PCB had requested to swap venues for the Australia game in Chinnaswamy with Afghanistan’s game in Chennai stating that the ground conditions would favour Afghanistan.
ICC bashed PCB’s request and went ahead with releasing the original schedule. Pakistan have now expressed hesitation over participation in the tournament. Despite PCB’s venue change request the WC schedule remains the same and hence Pakistan are uncertain about their participation in the tournament.
Pakistan team await ‘government clearance’
Pakistan had requested venue changes by stating the reason that Chepauk’s spinning conditions will favor Afghanistan and their bowlers. The ICC, however, rejected the request and announced the schedule as per the originally assigned venues of the games.
An official source from the Pakistan Board said, “Our participation in the World Cup and us playing in Ahmedabad on October 15 or in Mumbai if we qualify for semi-finals will all be dependent on government clearance. We have already informed the ICC that our participation in the tournament or any issues over venues is linked to firstly the PCB getting clearance from the government to travel to India.” (via NDTV)
The 2023 ODI World Cup is set to kick off from 5th October with a match-up between England and New Zealand. Pakistan’s world cup is scheduled to start on 6th October in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, India’s campaign begins on 8th October against Australia at Chennai.
