During the match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the hosts edged past the Sanju Samson-led side with Tim David‘s three back-to-back sixes in the last over. But before David’s exploits, RR’s young star Yashasvi Jaiswal grabbed everyone’s attention with his maiden hundred in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Jaiswal racked up a 62-ball 124 runs with the help of a whopping 16 boundaries and eight sixes. He played throughout the innings and got dismissed in the last over.

But, apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal’s knock, another topic became a talking point among the netizens. Photos showing Jaiswal at a pani puri shop were widely shared on social media and one user claimed that it was the RR skipper Sanju Samson who discovered the young talent.

In 2020, once Sanju Samson went out to eat panipuri at a stall. The young boy selling Panipuri said, “Bhaiya main bhi cricket khelta hoon, aap dekho meri batting” (Brother, I also play cricket, you watch by batting). Sanju agreed and watched his batting, he liked it and told team management and then RR captain smith. And that boy Yashasvi Jaiswal has hit his first 100 today. Don’t stop dreaming ever,” the user wrote.

But a fact check by The Quint revealed that that picture dates back to 2018 when Jaiswal was already an Under-19 cricketer. And it wasn’t Samson who discovered the star opener but his current coach Jwala Singh, in Mumbai. Jwala had also revealed that he saw Jaiswal batting against A-list bowlers for the first time in 2013.

Jaiswal is from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh but he traveled to Mumbai to receive cricket coaching. There he had to live in a tent and would also sell pani puri to meet ends meet.
