India’s batter Suryakumar Yadav surprised everyone as he walked out to the field wearing Sanju Samson’s jersey in first India vs West Indies ODI. As Samson was not selected in the playing XI, it was strange for the fans to see his jersey being used in the game. Yadav wore the jersey not just when fielding but also when he was batting.

While fans jokingly claimed that Yadav wore the jersey as a protest against the team management for not including Samson in the playing XI, the actual reason was something else.

Suryakumar Yadav used Samson’s jersey in the first ODI against the West Indies because he could not find the right-sized jersey for himself. Although Yadav had been given his jersey, it did not fit him and the replacement jersey is still on its way and will be only available after the second ODI. 

“There was some size issue with his jersey. We were told about it two days before the game. He will be receiving his new jersey after the second ODI as the BCCI has shipped it with Indian team players selected for the T20 series. Till then he will be wearing his teammate’s jersey while playing,” a BCCI source was quoted saying by The Indian Express.

Will Sanju Samson replace Suryakumar Yadav in second ODI?

While Sanju Samson’s jersey got a chance to feature in the playing XI, it is to be seen when the wicketkeeper batter gets a chance. There was quite an uproar after Samson was not included in the playing XI for the first ODI and after Suryakumar Yadav failed to impress, the cries only got louder.

Fans want Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid to give Samson a chance ahead of Yadav who has shambolic numbers in the 50-over format. The wicketkeeper has done a brilliant job in the 11 ODIs he has played. Samson averages an impressive 66 in this format.
