Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has unveiled its squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, despite a slew of injuries. They will be missing key players due to numerous injuries, which is alarming. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera were injured during the 2023 Lanka Premier League (LPL), Hasaranga with a hamstring injury and Chameera with a shoulder injury.
Dilshan Madushanka‘s oblique muscle injury has ruled out his participation in both the Asia Cup and the World Cup. Lahiru Kumara‘s participation in the tournament is in doubt due to recurring side tension. Avishka Fernando, who is recovering from a COVID-19 infection, will join the team once he is fully fit.
Sri Lanka, led by Dasun Shanaka and vice captain Kusal Mendis, are determined to defend their title despite the odds. Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne and Charith Asalanka are the key top-order batsmen while Dhananjaya de Silva and Chamika Karunaratne are indispensable all-rounders. The onus now rests on Kasun Rajitha, Matheesa Pathirana, Pramod Madushan and Binura Fernando as their frontline bowlers are unavailable. Maheesh Theeksan will be assisted in the spin department by newcomers Dushan Hemantha and Dunith Wellilage.
