It’s a World Cup year and Dinesh Karthik is performing in the Indian Premier League (IPL)! After Karthik’s match-winning knock against Punjab Kings (PBKS), social media went abuzz with memes remembering what happened in the 2022 IPL and the T20 World Cup that year.

Karthik batted at a monstrous strike rate of 183.33 in the 16 matches he played in 2022 IPL, scoring 330 runs. The way he batted throughout the tournament, the selectors deemed him an important asset for the T20 World Cup.

But Karthik couldn’t emulate his IPL success in the T20 World Cup. He scored just 14 runs from four innings before the management decided to drop him to include Rishabh Pant.

And now in the current IPL, Karthik scored 38* and 28*. During Royal Challengers Bengaluru‘s (RCB) match against PBKS, the former was on the cusp of losing the match if it wasn’t for Karthik and Mahipal Lomror. As Karthik performed brilliantly in these matches, netizens started believing that it would help him make a comeback to the national team once again for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

But the wicketkeeper-batter doesn’t think so, it seems. He took to X to share a photo of himself laughing and captioned it with, “Me seeing those ‘It’s a world cup year’ memes.”

Simon Doull compared Dinesh Karthik with MS Dhoni

After Dinesh Karthik‘s knock against PBKS, Simon Doull praised the wicketkeeper batter by comparing him with Captain Cool MS Dhoni. Doull said Karthik held his nerves under pressure like Dhoni and tried to understand the bowler’s plan.

That's why when you've got a DK, a Dinesh Karthik to get at the backend with that experience. We talked about what he passes on to the youngsters and the side, but it's the experience of keeping calm, understanding what the bowler is trying to do, knowing where your strengths are, and it's outside the MS Dhoni school.

RCB will next lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29. They have so far lost one and won one match.
