Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment after Ravichandran Ashwin‘s claim of how players feel lonely in modern times, that due to the competition, everyone thinks only about their games and not involve in friendly activities. Gavaskar in a recent interview revealed a reason behind this situation.

Ashwin, after the World Test Championship (WTC) Final snub, told The Indian Express, how once upon a time all the teammates were friends and now they have become mere colleagues. He believes that every player wants to be better than the rest which is why they don’t have the time to have fun or treat each other as friends.

It’s a sad thing because you should be able to get together after play ends and maybe not talk about the game but talk about music, maybe talk about your interest in space. But if that is not what is happening, that is disappointing,” Gavaskar told The Indian Express.

Gavaskar thinks the reason why cricketers in modern times were not too close with each other is due to every player getting a single room in the hotel. “Having said that, the new thing that started 20 years back or longer is that every player gets a single room. That too can be a factor.”

India will be playing a two-match Test series against West Indies, starting July 12 at Windsor Park, Roseau in Dominica. It will also be the beginning of their new WTC cycle.

Ashwin, who has been included in the squad for the Test series, has played 11 Tests against West Indies, picking up 60 wickets and scoring 522 runs. In the Caribbean Island, the Chennai-born all-rounder has scored two tons at an average of 58.75 with 17 scalps.

Overall, he has picked up 697 runs in 270 matches across all the formats in international cricket. He is just three wickets short of reaching 700 scalps and in all possibilities, he will reach the landmark in the first Test.

This will make him the third Indian bowler to bag 700 wickets. Before him, Anil Kumble (956 wickets) and Harbhajan Singh (711 wickets) had reached that milestone. At the same time, it will be interesting to see whether Ashwin can surpass Harbhajan’s wicket tally.
