He gave up his captaincy just weeks before the 2023 Asia Cup, citing a back injury as the cause. He didn’t participate in the Asia Cup as well, but returned to play in the ODI series against New Zealand. Although he did play two matches, he had complained about some discomfort on his back.

According to reports, both Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al-Hasan were at the Bangladesh Cricket Board headquarters. Tamim had informed selectors and Shakib that if he were to travel to India, he couldn’t play more than 5 than five matches as he was not fully fit. Hearing this, Shakib refused to take Tamim in the squad. According to a Bangladesh newspaper, The Daily Star, a source inside the BCB confirmed that Shakib would not go to the World Cup if Tamim was a part of the squad.
