England announce 15 man squad for the ODI World Cup, Jason Roy AXED for rising star

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced their 15 man squad for the upcoming 2023 ICC ODI World Cup which will be held in India. The England Men’s team selector, Luke Wright, announced the squad and said they were confident this team could defend their title. 

Luke Wright said the team has been blessed with an incredibly strong group of white ball players which was visible in the ODI series with New Zealand. The team is filled with England stars like Johnny Bairstow, Mark Wood, Dawid Malan, Sam Curran and Joe Root.

Ben Stokes has been included after coming out of retirement. Opener Jason Roy, who was integral in England’s triumph in the 2019 World Cup, has been dropped while Test cricket breakout star Harry Brook has been selected. Pacer Jofra Archer, who has been struggling with injury, will be traveling to India with the squad as a reserve where he will also be continuing his rehab.

England Squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup: 

  • Batsmen: Harry Brook, Dawid Malan, Joe Root
  • Bowlers:  Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer (Reserve)
  • All-Rounders: Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes
  • Wicket-Keepers: Jos Buttler (captain), Jonny Bairstow

Harry Brook selected despite no-show in New Zealand series

24-year-old Harry Brook has been selected for the 2023 ODI Series despite not having a noteworthy performance against New Zealand. Brook has played 6 ODIs and has scored only 123 runs. His selection in the team comes with the expense of dropping Jason Roy. Talking about the selection of Harry Brook, Wright said The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad.”

Jason Roy hasn’t featured much in 2023, playing in only 2 ODI series. Despite that, he has scored 278 runs in 6 innings. He opened for the English Team in the 2019 ODI World Cup, scoring 443 runs in the tournament. Despite strong performances in the past few years, he has been left out. He had missed out the New Zealand series due to a back Injury.
