On 26th October Sri Lanka faced England in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. The match was played in the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, which is known as a batters heaven. Both teams have only won 1 game in the World Cup so far. England won the toss and chose to bat first, but the Sri Lankan bowling attack was just too good for the defending champions. 

Angelo Mathews drew first blood as he picked up the first wicket of Dawid Malan. Three overs later Joe Root got himself run out after a brilliant throw by Mathews. Kasun Rajitha made Jonny Bairstow play the ball into the hands of mid-on and the very next over Lahiru Kumara dismissed captain Jos Buttler. In his next over Kumara dismissed Liam Livingstone and a few overs later Mathews returned to pick up Moeen Ali’s wicket. Rajitha picked up yet another wicket by getting Chris Woakes caught and thanks to some smart cricket by Kusal Mendis, Adil Rashid was run out. Maheesh Theekshana picked up the last wicket after getting Mark Wood stumped.

156 is the lowest ODI total in the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, with India scoring the previous lowest score, 168, in 1999. The match also saw the return of Angelo Mathew in the playing XI after 4 months. Since 2020, he has featured in only 7 ODIs. In his comeback match, he picked up 2 crucial English wickets and ran out Joe Root.

Fans criticize poor batting display by England as Sri Lanka bowl them out for 156 runs 

Despite being the Defending champions, England have given one of the worst title defenses in the history of the World Cup. They are en route to lose their 4th match of the tournament, a loss that could contribute to them becoming one of the first teams to get knocked out of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup

Fans were critical of their poor batting performance, saying they played nothing like defending champions. Many were happy with the the performance of Angelo Mathews, who was instrumental in bowling out England

Both England and Sri Lanka had won only one match in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Thanks to a brilliant bowling performance, Sri Lanka could win their 2nd match and be tied on points with Pakistan and Afghanistan. If England do manage to defend their target, they could keep their title defense alive.
