Equal pay: BCCI announces equal pay for men and women cricketers; how much will the women cricketers get?
BCCI announces equal pay for men and women cricketers
In a historic declaration, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah announced on Thursday [October 27] that Indian women cricketers will be getting equal pay to their male counterparts. This step can hugely affect the women’s game in the country.
The current wage gap between male and female cricketers is huge. Indian women cricketers play less cricket than male players and currently are paid Rs 400,000 for the Test, and 100,000 for T20Is and ODIs.
“I’m pleased to announce @BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket,” Shah tweeted.
“The BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support,” Shah added.
As per the new rule, Harmanpreet and Co. will now receive Rs 15 lakh per Test, Rs 6 lakh per ODI, and Rs 3 lakh per T20I. Also, earlier, the Indian board had announced a fully-fledged women’s IPL will commence next year.
BCCI President Roger Binny said: “In our Appec Council meeting today, we have made a marquee decision on pay equity for our women cricketers. Our women players will be paid the same match fees as men in international cricket. This decision sets the platform to gorw and develop cricket. I believe this is a significant step forward for women’s cricket and the game overall.”
Notably, BCCI isn’t the first body to make this historic change. New Zealand Cricket also announced the equal pay move in July, earlier this year.
