Ex-India coach Greg Chappell facing FINANCIAL problems, friends set up fundraiser page

Australia great Greg Chappell is facing financial issues post-retirement from cricket. His friends have started an online fundraising platform to help him.

In an interview with News Corp, Chappell admitted that although he is doing fine, he is not living a luxurious life. As per reports, Chappell reluctantly agreed to get help from the fundraising platform, GoFundMe.

Most of the fans associate cricket with luxury, for most of the current cricketers sign multiple contracts with the national boards and with franchises. Chappell opined that though the current players are enjoying lots of benefits, it’s not the same for most of the former cricketers.

I think most people assume that because we played cricket we are all living in the lap of luxury. While I’m certainly not crying poor, we’re not reaping the benefits that today’s players are,” Chappel told News Corp.

Greg Chappell thinks cricket has not done enough for former cricketers

Greg Chappell said that he is not the only player from his generation who is experiencing financial difficulties. The 75-year-old thinks the game has not done enough for the cricketers of his era. Chappell believes that those cricketers who have set the stage for the next generation and helped cricket reach where it is today, should be recognized for their role.

Chappell made his international debut in 1970 in a Test match against England, then made his ODI debut in 1971. He has played 87 Tests and 74 ODIs for Australia, scoring 7110 and 2331 runs, respectively.

He has 24 Test and three ODI centuries to his name. He last played an international match in 1984, against Pakistan. Chappell was also a head coach of the Indian Cricket Team from 2005 to 2007.
