Slater made his debut against England in June 1993 and went on to play 74 Tests and 42 ODIs for Australia between 1993 and 2001. He scored 5312 runs in Tests at an average of 42.83, including 14 centuries and 21 half-centuries. In ODIs, he scored just 987 runs, with nine half-centuries.

In First Class cricket, where he played for the New South Wales, the 53-year-old collected 14912 runs from 216 matches. After being ignored by the selectors for his prolonged slump in form, he started playing domestic cricket, before retiring in 2004.

After his career as a cricketer, he decided to do a job in broadcasting but was terminated from his role at Channel Seven because of controversy related to his ex-wife. That same year, he made headlines for his criticism of the Australian government for its strict Covid protocols. Slater was stuck in the Maldives after leaving the bio-bubble at the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he did commentary.

In 2022, he again hit the headlines after being convicted of assault. He breached a restraining order by contacting his ex-partner via phone. For this, he was sentenced to two years in jail.

The domestic violence charges against him were dismissed citing mental health conditions. He reportedly was diagnosed with bipolar disorder by a psychologist and two doctors.

That’s significant because if he has bipolar disorder and he’s not being treated for it, then … it’s likely that any treatment he has had hasn’t treated the whole of his condition,” Fox Sports quoted Slater’s lawyer as telling the court last November.
