Former India captain MS Dhoni has retired from international cricket but what he has left behind will be remembered for a long time. It’s with practice and improvement of his skills that he did wonders with his captaincy as well as with his gloves behind the stumps.
Former India player and former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selector Saba Karim recently revealed that something was lacking in Dhoni’s wicketkeeping which he improved in time, claiming it was also the turning point of his career.
“Even for wicket-keeping, the footwork that one should have was lacking a bit. We worked with him on this at that time, and he still remembered what he was taught,” Saba Karim said on JioCinema.
Saba Karim reveals the second major turning point of MS Dhoni’s career
Saba Karim feels the second major turning point in MS Dhoni’s career was when the former India skipper got the chance to play in the tri-series between India A and Pakistan A and Kenya in 2003. Karim said as Dinesh Karthik got the chance to play for the national team, Dhoni was given the wicketkeeping duties.
Saba lauded Dhoni’s wicketkeeping in the tri-series but lavished even more praise on his batting. Since then, Karim said, Dhoni had been in the reckoning. Karim further added that when he was in Kolkata back then, he told Sourav Ganguly about Dhoni. But as Ganguly hadn’t seen Dhoni’s batting, he did not select him for the Pakistan tour but Dhoni got the chance after that.
Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. Under his leadership, India became champions in the ICC events (T20 World Cup in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011, and Champions Trophy in 2013).
