India’s star youngster Shubman Gill flopped in the West Indies series so far. Except for the lone 85-run knock in the third ODI, he has not been able to produce impressive innings in the West Indies multi-format series. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra opined that a slow track could be the reason why Gill is struggling to find his rhythm.

In the Test series, Gill could manage six, 10, and 29* runs. In the ODIs, apart from that 85, he scored seven and 34 runs. In T20Is, he could not even reach a double-digit score. And as the ODI World Cup is closing in, Indian fans look concerned with Gill’s form.

During the IPL, I read in many places that he is no longer the prince but the king,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel. He then added that after the IPL, when Gill batted in overseas matches, he failed to score runs. “I feel there is one thing with him for sure- when the pitches are slightly slow, he will find it difficult to get into the rhythm,” Chopra added.

Gill’s form soared earlier this year and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Gujarat Titans (GT). He scored his double hundred in ODI against New Zealand. And in fact, he amassed the second-most total in an IPL season with 890 runs in 17 matches. But right after IPL, in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, eyebrows raised when he could produce just 13 and 18 runs in the two innings.

Because of his outstanding performances earlier this year, he found himself in the fifth spot in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings. Ishan Kishan also secured his career best when he jumped to 36th place. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam continues to stand atop the rankings.
