“What is Ashwin supposed to prove after taking 712 international wickets?” ex-India cricketer unhappy with Ravichandran Ashwin’s 2023 Asia Cup snub
Gharvi opined that as Ashwin is a quality bowler with more than 700 international wickets, he should have been given the chance to bowl in the Asia Cup, keeping the 2023 ODI World Cup in mind.

India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin‘s power on home soil is known already. Slow Indian pitches mean more turns and a dominating Ashwin creating havoc. This is why, former India cricketer Karsan Gharvi expressed his disappointment over Ashwin’s non-selection in the 2023 Asia Cup, starting August 30.
The format is ODI and the management preferred Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav over Ashwin. Before the 17-member squad announcement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), suggestions were given to include Ashwin for the continental tournament.
Gharvi opined that as Ashwin is a quality bowler with more than 700 international wickets, he should have been given the chance to bowl in the Asia Cup, keeping the 2023 ODI World Cup in mind. The ODI World Cup will be played in India this year in October-November.
“What is Ashwin supposed to prove after taking 712 international wickets? He has not been treated well despite being a senior player,” he said on the sidelines of the Ceat Cricket Rating Award in Mumbai.

Will Indian management include Ravichandran Ashwin in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad?

Though Rohit Sharma, during his recent press conference, stated that there are still hopes for Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal to be a part of the ODI World Cup, one might wonder if the management would make major changes in their World Cup squad at all. This year’s Asia Cup will be played in ODI format and India will want to start their World Cup campaign without a lot of changes to their squad.
Only time will tell if the other spinners’ performance in the 2023 Asia Cup will prompt Ashwin’s inclusion in the World Cup squad. At the same time it’s important to keep in mind that the pitches in World Cup will be different and may assist the pacers more. Ashwin, however, was part of the 2011 squad that won the coveted trophy.
