Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes tearaway pacer Umran Malik should be kept in the scheme of things for at least in T20Is before the 2024 T20 World Cup. Malik has been ignored by the selectors for a long time, and he also could not find his name in the squad for the upcoming all-format South Africa series.
India are set to play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Test matches in South Africa with the first match (first T20I) starting on December 10 at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. Malik was not added to any squads, and he also did not play in the recently concluded five-match T20I home series against Australia.
Chopra reminded the Indian cricket fraternity of Malik, who used to be a regular face in Indian squads in the past. The Jammu pacer has played eight T20Is and grabbed 11 wickets with an economy rate of 10.49 and an average of 22.09.
I feel he should be considered. You kept him on the team until some time back. You had played him, it was either against the West Indies or Ireland. After that, he was missing. Use Bhartiya squad se aise nikala gaya doodh me se makkhi nikalke fek diya (He has been removed from the India squad like taking out a fly from milk).Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Umran Malik had a below-par 2023 IPL season
The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a below-par campaign in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). With four wins and 10 defeats from 14 matches, they ended up at the bottom of the points table with eight points.
Umran Malik represents SRH, and he too did not have a campaign he wished for. From eight matches, all he could grab were five wickets at an economy rate of 10.85.
It was his worst season since his debut in 2021. After playing just three matches, scalping two wickets in IPL 2021, Malik bagged 22 wickets from 14 matches in IPL 2022, the fourth highest after Yuzvendra Chahal, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Kagiso Rabada.
