Hashmatullah Shahidi-led Afghanistan scripted history on Saturday (8 July) as they beat Bangladesh in the second ODI of the three-match series and took an unassailable lead. The visitors completely outplayed the host team as Afghanistan won the match by 142 runs. It was a complete team effort from Afghanistan as more than one player starred in their performances.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran scored centuries while also putting on a massive 256-run opening partnership. While Gurbaz scored a 125-ball 145, Zadran scored 100 runs off 119 balls. On the back of this mammoth opening stand, Afghanistan put on 331/9 on the board.

Then, with the ball, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fazalhaq Farooqi wreaked havoc claiming three wickets apiece. Rashid Khan also bagged two wickets to bundle Litton Das-led Bangladesh for 189. Mushfiqur Rahim (69) fell alone in the middle as others could hardly make a contribution.

With this win in the second ODI and having won the first one by the DLS method, Afghanistan gained an unassailable lead of 2-0. They now stand a chance to whitewash the Tigers at their home. Nevertheless, even if they don’t, Afghanistan have already scripted history.

Meanwhile, a few Indian fans were quick to bring India’s series defeat against the same team last year.

Notably, Rohit Sharma-led India lost a three-match ODI series against the Tigers 1-2. While the Men in Blue lost the first two matches, India managed to save themselves from embarrassment and won the final match on the back of a century from Virat Kohli and a double century from Ishan Kishan.
